Rwanda: Rugali (washed) - Micro Lot - Light / Filter Roast

Rugali Washing Station is a new coffee processing plant developed earlier this year by Muharo Trading Co (MTC) in the south west Nyamasheke region of Rwanda. In 2015 the introduction of new zoning laws by the National Agricultural Export Board (NAEB) provided an opportunity for MTC to build two new washing stations in an area of Nyamasheke where there were limited purchasing points for coffee growers.

Rugali Coffee Washing Station is built next to the village of Rwamiko and purchases coffee from around 140 families in the area. Coffee processed here is grown between 1450 and 1650 MASL and employs 2 full time employees.

A big point of difference with MTC's new project Rugali, is their social values:

-Firstly, They gifted 2ha of land for the local communities around their washing stations to grow additional food crops, and gifted ten cattle for to provide milk to the local communities.

-Secondly, their full time staff are paid $8 USD per day, compared to the national average wage of $2-3.

And, on this first season, farmers were paid an average of 202 RWF per kilo of cherry, on top of this, our Nz partners paid an additional 50 RWF per kilo, a total average of 252 RWF per kilo.

The average price of cherry paid by other washing stations in the area was 175 RWF and the national market price was 150 RWF, meaning farmers were paid 30% more than the local price and 40% more than the national market price for cherry.

There were two primary washed lots produced at Rugali this year. These are defined by density grading’s of A1 and A2. This Micro-lot is an A1 lot produced by a small number of producers and was separated from the larger A2 lot due to its quality and flavour.

Rwanda coffee's are typically clean with big sweetness, with some floral and fruity notes, and this tasty micro lot sits right in there on the fruity side of floral. Our initial tasting showed notes like melon, grape, and peach. What are you tasting?
