The Layo Teraga Coop is part of the larger Oromia Coffee Cooperative in Sidama, a region in Southern Ethiopia.

Layo Teraga runs its own mill and has about 500 members supplying cherries to the station. This coffee was grown at an altitude of 1800 – 2200 meters and is an excellent example of why washed Ethiopian coffees are so sought after.

Coffee is grown in “semi forested” shade, which by any other standard would be considered dense canopy, on small garden-like farms scattered across the dry, golden hills of Northern Guji.

The Union considers Layo Teraga to be one of its prized washing stations and has invested in process-level upgrades, including tile for fermentation tanks, a new McKinnon depulper, and a new and improved shed for storage.

Oromia Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (OCFCU) is located within Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Region of Southern Ethiopia (part of the formerly named region ofbSidamo/Sidama). The co-op union was founded after a crisis in 1998 that left coffee farmers penniless from fraudulent transactions.

OCFCU has since strengthened relationships with buyers through a transparent sales process and are Fair Trade certified.

Their coffees are organic and Fair Trade®, providing the growers and their families with the best possible price for their coffees. OCFCU exports traceable, fair trade, organic, UTZ, and Rain Forest Alliance certified coffees.

 The objectives of OCFCU are:

-To empower Ethiopian coffee farmers to negotiate higher prices in their local market.

-To improve farmers' incomes by exporting their coffee directly, at higher prices.

-To provide member farmers and clients with reliable service.

-To improve the social condition of farmer, by assisting them to access social services such as better schooling opportunities, better health services and clean water supply.

-To improve the quality and productivity of Ethiopian coffee.
