Sey'muke is a small ancestral settlement located to the north of Pueblo Bello deep in traditional Arhuaco territory, and is located at the foot of Gallito, one of the four sacred hills at which offerings are made. Sey'muke is a small part of the larger ANEI Co operative with which we have a long standing relationship.
Sey'muke is an isolated spot with difficult access, situated deep in the mountains of the Sierra, and has a biological system of wild and unique fauna and flora. It also is a place with lagoons, springs and sacred stones. This territory is home for around 50 families, who as an independent people abide by their own laws and maintain their own customs.
Its microclimate is very favourable for crops such as tubers, vegetables, cocoa, and coffee which are surrounded by native trees such as guamo, cedar, avocado, mango and citrus, which - along with good traditional processing techniques - help to create the conditions that provide coffees with complex profiles.
Emphasizing the history of these places, the Arhuaco people have been the victim of intercultural violence, and the abuse of Spaniards who came to their lands and attempted to change the culture and religion of the local people. However as brothers they take responsibility to reinforce the existence of their traditions, culture and customs in order to maintain balance. Sey'muke is a great examples of this.
Founded in 1995, ANEI is an association of indigenous producers located in northern Colombia near the border with Venezuela in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta region. ANEI’s primary mission is to promote and support the cultural preservation of the indigenous peoples Arhuaco, Wiwa and Kogui.
As is common in Colombia the coffee is initially processed by hand on the farm to parchment and then sold to the co-operative for further processing.
Last year ANEI completed construction of their own processing facility, which means they are now able to control the quality of their coffee from seed through to packaging and sending to C4 roastery for all of our enjoyment.
Earlier this year when cupping various pre ship lots from ANEI, Sey'muke was one of the lots we just fell in love with, so naturally we said yes to everything they could provide.
Sey'muke has sweet fruit and spice aromas, with notes of soft stone fruit, vanilla, and a little cinnammon in the finish.
